About Alma Redemptoris Mater no. 2
This setting of the Marian antiphon begins by invoking the Mother of the Redeemer as the gateway to heaven and star of the sea. The text implores her to aid a people falling into sin. It recalls her miraculous conception of God the Creator, her eternal virginity, and her acceptance of the angelic greeting, Ave. The composer Bernard Hellebusch sets this sacred Latin text for SATB choir, providing a rich harmonic setting for the familiar words. The piece is suitable for services or concerts where devotion to Mary is a focus.
