About Alma Redemptoris mater a 5
This five-voice setting of the votive antiphon Alma Redemptoris mater would be appropriate for Marian services during Advent and Christmastide. L'Heritier weaves the Latin text of this prayer, invoking Mary as the Gate of Heaven and Star of the Sea, with great care and expressive detail. The choir, singing SSATB, is entrusted with conveying the plea for assistance to a people striving to rise from sin, and the acknowledgement of her miraculous role as Mother of God. The composer's sensitive treatment of the text highlights the tender yet powerful nature of this ancient Marian devotion.
