All'ombra

This setting for two tenors by Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger opens with a graceful interplay between the voices. The music gently unfolds, creating a serene atmosphere that perfectly suits the pastoral scene described in the text. The Italian lyrics speak of a shepherdess, Licori, whom the narrator urges to slow her pace. He describes how her beauty enchants everyone, even the sun, and implores her to stop. The text evokes a sense of tender admiration and a gentle plea, reflected in the intimate and expressive quality of the vocal writing. Kapsperger's skill in creating evocative soundscapes is evident in this charming secular song.
