Alleluia, song of gladness,
voice of joy that cannot die;
alleluia is the anthem
ever raised by choirs on high;
in the house of God abiding
thus they sing eternally.
Alleluia thou resoundest,
true Jerusalem and free;

A traditional unison setting of the hymn Alleluia, song of gladness, this piece is suitable for liturgical settings, particularly during Eastertide. The text expresses the contrast between the eternal rejoicing of heaven and the exiles' longing for God during their earthly pilgrimage. It moves from the heavenly Alleluia, sung by the Church triumphant, to the earthly Church, acknowledging its present struggles but ultimately praying for the joy of the Easter feast in paradise.
