About Alle danze, alle gioie
Claudio Monteverdi’s Alle danze, alle gioie is a secular madrigal for TTB voices. The text, in Italian, celebrates the joys of love and beauty. It moves from the 'dances, joys, and delights' that inflame the heart to the adornments of women – gems, pearls, and flowers – and finally to the pleasures of the table, with fine cups, crystal, and fruit. Monteverdi captures the spirit of the Renaissance madrigal, setting the vivid imagery of the poem with musical contrasts, moving from exultant celebration to more intimate reflection. It is a vibrant example of its genre.
