About All-Night Vigil (Vespers)
The All-Night Vigil, also known as Vespers, is Rachmaninoff's profound setting of ancient Orthodox liturgical texts. Composed in 1915, it is one of his most significant sacred works, deeply rooted in Russian musical tradition and the spiritual atmosphere of the Orthodox Church. The music masterfully evokes the solemnity and devotion of the all-night vigil service, with its rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines. This arrangement for SSAATTBB choir captures the full sonic spectrum of Rachmaninoff's original conception, allowing the choir to explore a vast range of colour and dynamic intensity. The Church Slavonic text, integral to the Orthodox tradition, speaks of praise, repentance, and yearning for divine light, themes that Rachmaninoff translates into powerfully emotive choral writing.
