All Among the Barley by Elizabeth Stirling — Lyrics

1. Come out, 'tis now September, the hunters' moon's begun, And through the wheaten stubble we hear the frequent gun; The leaves are paling yellow, and kindling into red, And the ripe and golden barley is hanging down its head. Refrain (after each verse): All among the barley, who would not be blithe, When the free and happy barley is smiling on the scythe.

About All Among the Barley

Elizabeth Stirling's setting of All Among the Barley captures the spirit of autumn harvest. This SATB arrangement for mixed voices brings to life the English text describing the changing seasons, from the arrival of September and the golden barley ready for scythe, to the personification of Spring, Summer, and Autumn. The composer's skill is evident in how the music reflects the lyrical imagery, particularly the joyous refrain celebrating the harvest. The piece is a charming example of a secular partsong, perfect for a choir seeking a piece that evokes a sense of rural tradition and seasonal celebration with its familiar, heartwarming words and melody.
