Akuko Omumu Kristi by Jude Nnam — Lyrics
About Akuko Omumu Kristi
As its title suggests, "Akụkọ Ọmụmụ Kristi" (The Story of the Birth of Christ) brings the Nativity narrative to life with vivid storytelling and joyful melodies. Jude Nnam’s composition is a beloved staple for Nigerian Catholic choirs during the Christmas season, perfectly capturing the drama, urgency, and ultimate triumph of the holy night in Bethlehem.
The verses unfold like a dramatic play. We hear the anxious footsteps of Joseph and Mary searching for a place to stay, the harsh rejection at the inn, and their desperate rush to the manger as Mary’s time arrives. The choir paints these scenes with a rhythmic intensity that draws the congregation right into the cold night, feeling the couple's distress before the miraculous birth.
Then, the mood shifts gloriously in the final verse and refrain. The struggles of the night give way to the awe of the Incarnation and the angels' song of "Otito dịrị Chukwu n'elu kach'elu" (Glory to God in the highest). It is a wonderful, narrative-driven carol that allows the choir to lead the faithful from the humble, difficult reality of the manger straight into the radiant joy of Christmas morning.
