Ahi chi mi romp'il sonno by Philippe de Monte — Lyrics

Ahi chi mi romp’il sonno ahi chi mi priva Misero di quel ben ch’ogn’altr’avanza Chi mi leva di man quella speranza Ch’era gia lasso pur condott’a riva Era meco madonn’hor ch’io dormiva E si dolce m’apparv’a la sembianza Che di seco parlar preso baldanza I miei chiusi pensier tutti li apriva.

About Ahi chi mi romp'il sonno

This five-part Italian madrigal for SAATB opens with a dramatic depiction of interrupted sleep. Philippe de Monte’s setting captures the emotional turmoil of the text, which describes a dream of the beloved. The music shifts from the initial despair to a moment of ardent embrace, only to be abruptly awoken by the sun. The final lines, set with a sudden poignancy, express the pain of this rude awakening, where the light that dispels the dream also extinguishes the heart's joy. The intricate vocal writing reflects the complexity of the emotions expressed in this secular Renaissance part-song.
