Giovanni Gastoldi's canzonetta Ahi, che mi tien il core is a delightful example of secular Italian part-music from the Renaissance. Scored for two sopranos and bass (SSB), it sets a Petrarchan lament of unrequited love. The text expresses the singer's anguish at the cruelty of his beloved, who seems intent on his demise. He sighs and dies for her, yet she shows no pity for his suffering. His fate is so harsh that he feels more dead than alive from sorrow. The composer captures the emotional turmoil of the text with spirited and engaging musical lines, typical of the canzonetta form which often featured lively rhythms and clear melodic writing.
