AGNUS DEI

This setting of the "Agnus Dei" by Ifeanyichukwu Eze brings a layered reverence to the fraction rite of the Mass. Written entirely in tonic sol-fa, the manuscript notes that it was originally composed for the St. Donald's Parish Choir in Karu, Abuja, ahead of a 2008 Archdiocesan music competition. It captures the solemnity and vocal discipline expected of a choir preparing to lead the congregation into the mystery of Communion.

The music follows the traditional Latin text, but Eze introduces moving repetitions in the melody line. In the second invocation, the sopranos plead "miserere, miserere, miserere nobis" (have mercy on us), creating a gentle, cascading petition. As the piece draws to a close, the final "dona nobis pacem" (grant us peace) is repeated and stretched, allowing the harmony to settle into a profound, lingering calm just before the Eucharist is shared.
