AGNUS DEI (Missa Caritas) by Jude Nnam — Lyrics
About AGNUS DEI (Missa Caritas)
"Agnus Dei (Missa Caritas)" is a setting of the Lamb of God by Nigerian composer Jude Nnam. It is sung during the fraction rite of the Mass, right before Communion, as the priest breaks the Eucharistic bread.
The piece opens with a solemn, reverent bass solo calling out to the Lamb of God, before the full choir responds in four-part harmony. The repetition of "miserere nobis" (have mercy on us) builds a sense of deep petition, which shifts beautifully into the final plea for peace ("dona nobis pacem").
Written entirely in Latin, this setting brings a classic liturgical feel to the Mass while maintaining the rhythmic warmth characteristic of Nnam's compositions. Choirs often use it to add a sense of reverence and focus to the Communion rite.
