Affliti Spirti mei

In this secular Italian madrigal, Philippe Verdelot’s Afflitti spirti mei laments the lover’s eternal suffering. The text speaks of spirits in pain, finding no peace because their mistress delights in their torment. The poet recalls earlier, deceptive joys when love stole their freedom, and how the sweet entrapment eventually led to bitter realization. Now, only tears remain for these grave losses, especially since the one person who could grant solace only seems to enjoy their affliction. The SATB setting captures the dramatic despair of the text, with interwoven vocal lines reflecting the complex emotions of unrequited love and the torment it brings. This is a poignant example of Renaissance part-music.
