About Affliger chi per voi
Luca Marenzio’s Affliger chi per voi is a secular Italian madrigal for SATB choir. The music opens with a striking harmonic dissonance, which soon resolves, reflecting the text’s theme of suffering. The composer skillfully employs word painting to depict the singer’s anguish. The text speaks of the pain of one whose life is fading, questioning why love, instead of pity, brings such sorrow. The singer describes a weary, infirm pilgrim, longing for help but finding only pride and scorn, asking if it is a harsh custom for a beautiful woman to be armed with disdain and to break a life halfway, like a rocky reef.
