About Afferte Domino (1629)
Antonio Cifra's motet Afferte Domino is a powerful sacred work for double choir (SATB.SATB) with Latin text. The music is rich and sonorous, ideal for festive occasions, perhaps even Christmas given the references to the Nativity and the Magi. The text draws from Psalm 96 and also incorporates material from the Christmas liturgy, proclaiming the glory and honour due to God and celebrating the union of the Church with Christ, likening it to a wedding feast. The composer masterfully uses the two choirs to create dramatic contrasts and build to grand climaxes, making this a compelling choice for a choir seeking a substantial motet from the late Renaissance/early Baroque period.
