Adversum me loquebantur by Orlando di Lasso — Lyrics

mm In finem, pro iis qui commutabuntur. David. Salvum me fac, Deus, quoniam intraverunt aquae usque ad animam meam. Infixus sum in limo profundi et non est substantia. Veni in altitudinem maris, et tempestas demersit me. About Adversum me loquebantur

Orlando di Lasso was a prolific composer of sacred and secular music in the 16th century. This motet, Adversum me loquebantur, is a powerful setting of a Latin text drawn from the Psalms. The music reflects the dramatic pleas of the text, which speaks of being overwhelmed by troubles and enemies. Lasso masterfully employs the SATTB voicing to create rich textures and intense emotional expression. The composer uses the varied vocal lines to convey the struggle and desperation of the psalmist, building to moments of fervent supplication and ultimately, faith. It is a significant work of sacred Renaissance part-music.
