About Adieu Anvers

Noé Faignient, a composer of the late Renaissance, wrote this secular French chanson for five voices. The text expresses a poignant farewell to the noble city of Antwerp, not out of disgrace but because of a lady of unparalleled beauty. The singer laments his departure, yet finds solace in the thought of being accompanied by such a captivating figure. Faignient's setting for STTTB captures the emotional nuance of the words, blending the sorrow of leaving with the admiration for the lady. It is a fine example of the chansons that flourished in the Low Countries during this era.
