Ad te levavi by Ercole Bernabei — Lyrics

Ad te [Domine] levavi animam meam, Deus meus, in te confido: non erubescam neque irrideant me inimici mei. Etenim universi qui te expectant non confundentur.

About Ad te levavi

Ercole Bernabei's setting of Ad te levavi opens with an immediate sense of supplication, the SATB voices entering in succession to build a rich texture. The music closely follows the devotional Latin text, which is taken from the Introit for the first Sunday of Advent. The words express a profound trust in God: 'To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; in you I trust, let me not be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.' The composer's setting creates a mood of earnest prayer, with the interlocking vocal lines reflecting the plea for guidance found in the verses: 'Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths.'
