Ad placitum by Andreas Raselius — Lyrics

Psalmus David. Dominus regit me, et nihil mihi deerit: in loco pascuae, ibi me collocavit. Super aquam refectionis educavit me; animam meam convertit. Deduxit me super semitas justitiae propter nomen suum.

About Ad placitum

This motet from the late 16th century sets Psalm 23, the familiar Sheep and Shepherd psalm. Andreas Raselius, a German composer, has written for a substantial double choir (SSATTB), creating a rich sound palette. The text, in Latin, speaks of divine guidance and protection. The composer's setting is rich and imitative, with both choirs often working in dialogue, sometimes in unison, sometimes in contrasting textures. The motet progresses from the assurance of God's presence to a final thanksgiving for dwelling in the house of the Lord. It would be suitable for services in Ordinary Time or for a general reflection on faith and providence.
