About Ad Dominum cum tribularer
This motet sets a text from Psalm 120, traditionally known as a Song of Ascents. The composer Alexander Utendal vividly portrays the psalmist’s plea to the Lord in times of trouble, crying out for deliverance from deceitful tongues and treacherous words. The text speaks of a prolonged exile and the pain of living amongst those who hate peace, yet the psalmist remained a peacemaker, only to be attacked without cause. Utendal’s setting for five voices (SSTTB) offers a rich contrapuntal texture, reflecting the dramatic and emotional journey of the text from distress to a hopeful reliance on divine protection.
