Ach Gott vom Himmel 4vv by Michael Praetorius — Lyrics
Modernized wording and spelling:
Ach Gott vom Himmel, sieh darein,
Und lass dich das erbarmen;
Wie wenig sind der Heilgen dein;
Verlassen sind wir Armen.
Dein Wort man nicht lässt haben wahr,
Der Glaub ist auch verloschen gar
Bei allen Menschen Kindern.
Sie lehren eitel falsche List,
Was eigen Witz erfindet;
Ihr Herz nicht eines Sinnes ist,
In Gottes Wort gegründet.
Der wählet diess, der Ander das,
Sie trennen uns ohn alle Mass,
Und gleissen schön von aussen.
Gott wollt ausrotten alle Lahr,
Die falschen Schein uns lehren;
Darzu ihr Zung stolz offenbar
Spricht: trotz, wer will's uns wehren?
Wir haben Recht und Macht allein;
Was wir setzen das gilt gemein.

About Ach Gott vom Himmel 4vv
Michael Praetorius's Ach Gott vom Himmel is a powerful four-part setting of a German hymn. The text laments a spiritual decline, where God's word is disregarded and false teachings prevail. Praetorius's SATB arrangement likely served a Lutheran church setting, offering a robust musical commentary on the text's plea for divine intervention. The music would have provided a solemn and emphatic response to the theological concerns expressed in the original hymn. Its solemnity and directness make it suitable for reflection or for reinforcing the gravity of spiritual matters in a congregational context.
