Ach Gott im Himmel by Michael Praetorius — Lyrics
1. Ach, Gott im Himmel sieh' darein,
und lass dich dess erbarmen,
wie wenig sind der Heil'gen dein,
verlassen sind wir Armen.
Dein Wort man lässt nicht haben wahr,
der Glaub' ist auch erloschen gar,
bei allen Menschenkindern.

About Ach Gott im Himmel
This setting of a German chorale melody by Michael Praetorius opens with a clear, homophonic texture, highlighting the dignified solemnity of the hymn. The SATB voices move in close harmony, presenting the prayer for divine mercy with a sense of profound earnestness. The text, a plea for God's intervention and a lament over the decline of faith, is rendered with deep conviction. Praetorius's setting emphasizes the spiritual weight of the words, offering a powerful musical expression of devotion and a desire for renewed spiritual strength, grounded in the teachings of love for God and neighbour.
