Melchior Vulpius’s motet Accedentes servi is a substantial sacred work for SSATTB voices. Its Latin text, drawn from the parable of the wheat and the tares (Matthew 13:24-30), is treated with great skill. The composer crafts a rich, contrapuntal texture, with the many voices weaving intricate lines. The music effectively conveys the narrative, from the servants’ questioning to the master's wise instruction to allow both wheat and tares to grow until the harvest. The motet's dramatic arc builds towards the decisive separation at the time of reaping, offering a profound musical meditation on patience and divine judgment.
