About ABC - Sv. Terezie Benedikty od Kříže
These verses paint a picture of a royal daughter entering the palace, her dress woven with gold. The text, from Psalm 45, speaks of her beauty and the king's desire for her, her new role as he becomes her master. The music, for two voices, S and T, sets this Czech text with a solemnity suitable for sacred music. The responsory form, with its alternation between a refrain and verses, lends a devotional character to the piece, perhaps suggesting the spiritual journey of Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, to whom the piece is dedicated. The composer Karel Bříza uses this ancient form to explore themes of devotion and kingship.
