A prayer by Richard Allison — Lyrics
The spirit of grace graunt us, O Lord
to keep these lawes our harts restore
and cause us all with one accord
to magnifie thy name therefore.
For of our solves no strength wee have
to keep these lawes after thy will:
Thy might therefore, O Christ, we crave
that wee in thee may them fulfill.

About A prayer
This anthem for SATB voices sets a heartfelt English prayer. The text implores the Lord for grace and strength to follow divine laws, acknowledging human frailty and seeking Christ's assistance in fulfilling these commandments. The words express a deep reliance on Christ as Saviour and treasure, concluding with praise to the Trinity. Richard Allison's setting is a devotional piece, typical of the English sacred tradition, reflecting a profound spiritual plea for guidance and salvation.
