A nobil mensa by Giovanni Gastoldi — Lyrics
A nobil mensa del celeste ardore,
che da due lumi amorosetti usciva
Sol io nodriv’il core
Che strett’in mille nodi
Più assai prigion che’n libertà gioiva.

About A nobil mensa
Gastoldi's A nobil mensa is a delightful example of secular Italian madrigal writing for SSATB. The music is characterized by its lively, imitative textures, with voices entering in quick succession, creating a sense of joyful exuberance. The text expresses the singer's surrender to love, depicted as a celestial fire. Despite feeling like a prisoner of love, the speaker finds more joy in this captivity than in freedom, even as Love itself seems to mock his plight. The composer's skill is evident in how the music mirrors the text's playful yet passionate sentiments, making it a charming addition to any Renaissance program.
