Composed by Giovanni Battista Locatello, A mai s'amasti is a secular Italian madrigal for SSATTB voices. Its text explores a passionate, complex declaration of love, where the singer laments that the beloved gave her heart to him only after he had already given his own away. The subsequent lines describe a cycle of pursuit and retreat, with the singer's love continuing to burn for another, more pleasing than the object of his current address. This is typical of the expressive, often dramatic, word-painting found in Renaissance madrigal composition.
