Scott Villard’s setting of A boy is born in Bethlehem opens with a gentle, stepwise melodic line, soon joined by the other voices to create a warm, homophonic texture. The SATB choir celebrates the Nativity with this English text, which speaks of the joy brought to Jerusalem and the meeting of Mary and the holy child. The carol’s message of hope is enhanced by the interplay of the voices, building to an exultant Alleluia. A second verse introduces Joseph watching through the night, with the music reflecting the serene and radiant scene. The piece offers a delightful and accessible way to convey the Christmas story.
