A Birthday by Carlotta Ferrari — Lyrics
My heart is like a singing bird
whose nest is in a watered shoot,
my heart is like an apple tree
whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit,
my heart is like a rainbow shell
that paddles in a purple sea;
my heart is gladder than all these
because my love is come to me.

About A Birthday
Carlotta Ferrari’s A Birthday paints a vibrant scene of joyous celebration. The text expresses a heart overflowing with gladness, comparing it to a singing bird, a fruit-laden apple tree, and a rainbow shell. It evokes a desire for a magnificent celebration, a silken dais adorned with precious materials and symbols of abundance, all because the singer's beloved has arrived, marking a personal birthday. This Secular SATB chanson, sung in English, captures the effusive delight and festive spirit of the occasion with rich imagery.
