5 Motetten op. 40 by Josef Rheinberger — Lyrics

Alleluja. Dilexi, quoniam exaudiet Dominus vocem orationis meae. Quia inclinavit aurem suam mihi, et in diebus meis invocabo. Circumdederunt me dolores mortis; et pericula inferni invenerunt me. Tribulationem et dolorem inveni, et nomen Domini invocavi: o Domine, libera animam meam. Misericors Dominus et justus, et Deus noster miseretur. Custodiens parvulos Dominus; humiliatus sum, et liberavit me. Convertere, anima mea, in requiem tuam, quia Dominus benefecit tibi: quia eripuit animam meam de morte, oculos meos a lacrimis, pedes meos a lapsu. Placebo Domino in regione vivorum.

About 5 Motetten op. 40

This collection presents five motets by Josef Rheinberger, written for SATB choir. The texts are in Latin and German, drawing from sacred sources. The motets explore a range of devotional themes, from the exultation of the Alleluia to pleas for deliverance and expressions of faith. Rheinberger's characteristic harmonic language and contrapuntal mastery are evident throughout, creating rich textures and engaging vocal interplay. The music moves from moments of fervent supplication to serene confidence, reflecting the emotional depth of the biblical texts. This is a substantial work for a choir looking to engage with well-crafted German Romantic sacred repertoire.
